The sweltering Indian Subcontinent saw the return of 120-degree
heat Tuesday. The highest temperatures were reached in Pakistan: 122
degrees at Nawabshah, 121 degrees at Jacobabad, and 120 at Sibi. For
Jacobabad, this made for eight out of nine days having at least 120
degrees as a maximum temperature. Elsewhere in Pakistan, Pad Idan
registered 119, and Sukkur, 118. In much of India, meantime, the
number where not so high, but they represented substantial departures
above climatological means. At Ramagundum, 112 degrees was reached --
at least ten degrees above average. Nellore, at 109 degrees, was
nearly as much above average. Both sites are in Andhra Pradesh, a
southeastern state that has suffered inordinately in this deadly heat
wave. Onset of the rainy summer monsoon, likely to happen within
days, would significantly trim temperatures.
Vast swathes of Siberia, which makes up the bulk of Russia's
land mass, sweltered under summery heat early this week. Tuesday,
Vitim, on the upper Lena River, reached 94 degrees -- nearly 30
degrees above average.
Stormy weather beset parts of New Zealand early this week. On
North Island, the national capital, Wellington, was lashed by heavy
rain and strong winds. Rainfall here was 2.4 inches, or half the
monthly average, within 18 hours Monday to Monday night, local time.
Sustained winds blew 40-45 mph for more than 12 hours.
At Miyazaki, in southwestern Japan, rainfall was 6.7 inches within
36 hours as of Tuesday evening, local time.
