June 8, 2003 8:46 a.m.

An area of low pressure along a strung out front stretching from
just east of Japan southwestward to the northern part of the South
China Sea has been responsible for very heavy rain since Friday
night. The heavy rain began over southeastern China late Friday and
totaled 2-4 inches of portions of Fujian and Guangdong provinces over
the weekend. Downpours over Taiwan Friday night into Saturday swamped
Tainan, a city on the island's west coast, with 9.61 inches of rain.
Also, 6.61 inches rain accumulated at Heng Chun at the southern tip
of Taiwan. Meanwhile, it has been raining nearly non-stop since Friday
night over Ishigaki Jima, a small southern island of the Ryukyu Island
chain. Through Sunday, 8.38 inches of rain has fallen. Naha, on
neighboring Okinawa to the north, had 5.22 inches of rain.

Early Sunday, EDT, Tropical Cyclone Gina was near 17.6 south,
161.9 east, or about 450 miles to the northwest of Noumea, New
Caledonia and was moving to the south-southwest at about 4 mph. Gina
maintained sustained winds of 105 mph Saturday night over open waters,
but is expected to weaken Sunday as it recurves to the south and then
the southeast. Even so, this will bring gusty winds and tropical rain
to the southern Vanuatu Islands, the Loyalty Islands and northern New
Caledonia.

Sweltering heat continued Sunday over interior Pakistan. Pad Idan
hit 120 degrees, while Sibi came in at 121. The hottest location was
Jacobabad with 124 degrees, good enough for the world's high.

It was another hot day across southwestern Canada Saturday.
For the third straight day, Pemberton, British Columbia rose into the
90s for an afternoon high, topping out at 94 degrees, or about 20
degrees above the average. And, it sure felt like "summer" at
Summerland, where the mercury climbed to 92 degrees.
