Thursday, temperatures dipped -- slightly -- over heat-weary
India, although hardest-hit states such as Andhra Pradesh were still
hotter than average by 10 degrees or more. But in Pakistan, the heat
wave worsened. Two hot spots, Sibi and Jacobabad, wrestled for top
honors and ended the day seemingly tied -- with highs of 127 degrees.
But, considering tenths of a degree, Sibi's 126.7 topped Jacobabad's
126.5 degrees. Sharing the dubious honor of reaching 120 degrees
were Pad Idan (122) and Nawabshah (121). Meantime, this blazing heat
wave burned its way towards the west. Southeastern Iran was 116 to 118
degrees hot at Iranshahr, and the sparsely-settled southwest of
Afghanistan may have hosted 115-degree highs.
Thursday began with a severe blizzard clenching the Antarctica
Peninsula and the nearby South Shetland Island of West Antarctica.
Observations from this area, which has a tight cluster of research
bases, showed whiteouts, 70-mph sustained winds and 10-degree
temperatures.
Friday, Tropical Cyclone Gina over the South Pacific Ocean
passed just northwest of the New Hebrides Islands (Vanuatu). As of
early morning, EDT, Gina had highest sustained winds of nearly 65
mph. The cyclone is moving to the southwest at 10 mph. The storm is
forecast to remain on a southwesterly course the next couple of days.
Several inches of windswept rain lashed the northern New Hebrides
Islands early Friday. Winds gusted to 35 mph at Sola on the island of
Vanua Lava. Gina should maintain its strength the next couple of days
and could eventually threaten northwestern New Caledonia.
Thursday, the core of unusually hot weather shifted slightly
eastward over central and northern Europe. Temperatures topped 90
degrees in Poland at Poznan, Torun and Lodz. In Czech, Ceske
Budejovice reached 91 degrees, and Ostrava, 90. Also touching 90 was
Salzburg, Austria. These readings were 15 to 20 degrees above
climatological means.
The heat across north-central Europe has come at the end of a
long warm, dry spell. Warsaw, Poland has not had any rain since May
23rd. Since then temperatures have been warmer than normal every day
and some days nearly 20 degrees above normal. Thunderstorms overnight
Thursday night signalled a turn to somewhat cooler weather across
Poland, though rainfall was spotty.
Much of southern and eastern Europe has been substantially
warmer and drier than normal this spring. Over the past 5 weeks in Uman
in the central Ukraine, temperatures have averaged nearly 8 degrees
above normal. Dnepropetrovsk, also in the Ukraine has averaged 6
degrees warmer than normal and rainfall has been only 8 percent of
normal. Belgrade, Yugoslavia, for the same period has seen only 25
percent of normal precipitation and temperatures more than 7 degrees
above normal.
A strong thunderstorm doused Choluteca, Honduras overnight
Thursday night. In just a couple of hours time, 2.64 inches of rain
was measured.
