Without any doubt, Wednesday's weather headline from the world
sprang from the Indian Subcontinent, where a deadly heat wave
worsened. The highest readings were set in Pakistan, the 125-degree
high at Sibi being tops amongst many. Right behind was Jacobabad,
with 124. Other highs were 123 at Nawabshah, 122 at Pad Idan, and 120
at Sukkur. Outside of mountains and the coast, virtually all of
Pakistan reached 110 degrees Wednesday. From here, 110-degree heat
fanned out across the vastness of northern and middle India, even
reaching the sea in the hard-hit southern state of Andhra Pradesh.
Hot spots were Hisar, in the north, and Nagpur, near the nation's
middle, which observed 118 degrees.
To take some of the edge off the South Asian heat wave, consider
the Dome "C" station atop the ice cap of Antarctica. Tuesday night,
the temperature here dipped 105.7 degrees below zero. Moreover,
temperatures were 100 or more degrees below zero for at least 24
hours ended Wednesday.
A strong northbound cold front greatly cooled parts of middle
South America Tuesday. In Asuncion, the Paraguayan capital, for
example, highs in the lower 90s were set Saturday, Sunday and Monday
versus an average high in the middle 70s. The cold front passed Monday
night triggering a few thundershowers and ushering in much cooler air.
Temperatures hovered in the middle and upper 50s during the daytime
Tuesday, and with thick overcast and steady 20-35 mph winds it felt as
cool as the middle 40s.
Very warm, even hot, weather built over the heart of northern
Europe Tuesday and Wednesday. In Germany, 88 degrees was reached
Tuesday at Berlin, Karlsruhe and Leipzig whereas the average high in
early June is near 70 in these sites. Wednesday, 90 degrees was
touched at Berlin. Afternoon temperatures in the 80s were common daily,
elsewhere around Germany as well as in western Poland, Slovakia, Czech
Republic, parts of Austria, Switzerland and eastern France. Innsbruck,
Austria, was more than 15 degrees above average in climbing to 87
Tuesday, and to nearly 90 degrees Wednesday. Even Sweden, where Torup
Wednesday registered 85 degrees, basked in the summery glow.
The next named tropical storm, or cyclone, may be taking shape
over the middle South Pacific Ocean. As of Wednesday, there were
alerts for the possibility of a cyclone within a tropical low located
northwest of Fiji.
