Tuesday, Nangka, no longer a tropical storm, was slowly
dissipating over the northern Philippines Sea. Late Friday evening,
the ill-defined tropical depression was located some 200 miles
south-southwest of Naha, Okinawa, Japan; it was headed towards the
northeast at 23 mph with highest sustained winds of only 35 mph. The
depression was, for the next two to three days, forecast to slowly
dissipate will heading steadily northeastwards off southern and
southeastern Japan.
Laoag, in northwestern Luzon Island, Philippines, had rainfall of
8.1 inches Monday morning to Tuesday afternoon, local time.
Intense heat burned the parched earth of Pakistan Tuesday. Highs
above 120 degrees were set for a second-straight day. At Jacobabad,
123 degrees was reached. Sibi registered 122, and Nawabshah, 120.
Elsewhere, highs were 119 at Multan, and 118 at Sukkur. Nearby,
northwestern India had 117 at Hissar. On average, June is no
hospitable time in this part of South Asia. Mean daily high
temperature top out near 115 degrees in areas such as Jacobabad,
thereby making them comparable to the dead of summer at Death Valley,
California.
Some Caribbean Sea islands have endured unusually dry weather this
spring. In the Dominican Republic, for example, the city of Santo
Domingo recorded just 0.83 of an inch of rain during May whereas the
monthly average is 6.8 inches. From the first of April through Sunday,
total rainfall here was only 1.33 inches, or 12% of average. Rainfall
for the year stood at 31% of average.
At Fort Simpson, NWT, Canada, 24-hour rainfall as of Tuesday
morning was 2.1 inches -- one-fourth of their average yearly rainfall.
