[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Monday, Jun 02

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Mon Jun 02 2003 - 10:10:01 EDT

June 2, 2003 9:23 a.m.

Monday, Tropical Storm Nangka (06W), was between Taiwan and Luzon
Island, Philippines, on a path towards the northeast. As of early
morning, EDT, the core of Nangka was nearly 300 miles south-southeast
of Taipei, Taiwan, and within 80 miles south-southwest of southern-
most Taiwan. Headed towards the northeast at more than 10 mph, Nangka
owned highest sustained winds of more than 55 mph. Forecasts were for
a rather straightforward, northeasterly track towards the northeast.
After a near-term brush with southernmost Taiwan, Nangka would skirt
Japan's Ryukyu Islands including Okinawa within the next two days
before passing well to the south and east of Tokyo, Japan.

In the eastern North Pacific, an area of low pressure passing to
the south of Acapulco, Mexico was being watched for possible
development into a tropical depression or storm within the next 12-24
hours. This system could spread heavy rainfall over southwestern
Mexico.

Stifling heat lately has gripped the Indian Subcontinent and
there's not any immediate break in sight. Normally, this is the time
of extreme heat leading up to the start of seasonal summer rains.
This year, the heat has been abnormally intense -- indeed, deadly --
in such Indian states as Andhra Pradesh. Lately, temperatures as high
as 118 degrees have been set near the coast of Andhra Pradesh making
the average high of about 100 degrees some moderate by comparison.
Monday, highs to at least 115 degrees were set over most of India
between Andhra Pradesh and the Himalayan foothills, and from Bihar
and Orissa states westward to the Pakistan border. Delhi registered
112. And in Pakistan, the Indus River plain reached a blistering 121
degrees at Jacobabad. Sibi, near the edge of this plain, had 119
degrees.

Snow fell much of the time Saturday through early Monday at
Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. This southernmost city in the
world had 5 inches of snow on the ground as of Monday.

Saturday, a late-day thunderstorm dumped 3.2 inches of rain within
about one hour over Merida, Yucatan, Mexico.
