"Heavy thunderstorms and possible tornadoes left thousands without power
Saturday evening as a cold front moved through the region.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning for Union County
after radar indicated heavy rotation, said Scott Krentz, a National Weather
Service meteorologist. The warning expired at 5 p.m.

In a possible sign of a tornado touching down, officials received a report
of eight trees down in New Salem in northeast Union County, Krentz said.

The storms left about 9,000 customers without power in the Charlotte area,
said Shirley Lewis, a Duke Power official. Throughout its system in North
and South Carolina, 19,500 were without power, she said."
