Earlier in the weekend, the remnants of what was once tropical
storm Linfa lashed Japan with strong winds and flooding rain.
Saturday, local time, Muruoto Misaki, a headland on Shikoku Island,
had sustained winds of at least 70 mph; gusts undoubtedly topped
hurricane strength. As for rainfall, there was plenty. At Owase on the
Kii Peninsula of Honshu, rainfall was 18.2 inches within 12 hours
Saturday, and totaled 19.6 inches. Elsewhere, rainfall of 8.5 inches
within 24 hours was registered at Omaezaki, 8.3 inches at Izuhara, and
7.0 inches at Saigo.

Meanwhile, newly named Tropical Storm Nangka (06W), continues to
gather over the northern part of the South China Sea Sunday. The
center of Nangka was located about 215 miles to the west of Northern
Luzon, Philippines. With sustained winds of 40 mph, Nangka was a
minimal tropical storm and was drifting off to the northeast. Over the
next 24-48 hours, the tropical storm is expected to intensify a bit as
it moves northeastward through the Formosa (Luzon) Strait, just to the
south of Taiwan. Tropical rainfall has already doused areas hit hard
with heavy rainfall last week by Linfa. Olongapo, on the west end of
Luzon had 5.83 inches of rain so far this weekend.

Much of Great Britain basked in unusual warmth Saturday, and there
were some warm spots in Ireland and Northern Ireland, too. London's
Heathrow airport reached 84 degrees -- this was far above the average
high of 65. Other warm spots in England included Manchester,
Nottingham, Wittering, Brize Norton and Lyneham, each of which reached
the lower 80s. In Scotland, Kinloss surged to 77 degrees while
Aviemore and Eskdalemuir both peaked at 75. Casement, Ireland,
registered a high of 72 degrees.

Appreciable rain fell to the northwest of Mongolia near the Sayan
mountains in southern Russia Saturday into Sunday. At Uybat, rainfall
in 24 hours was 2.84 inches. Hakasskata and Tashtyp both had just
over 1.50 inches and Kommunar had 1.29 inches.
