Saturday, Linfa was no longer tropical in nature, but had become
part of a strong extra-tropical storm buffeting Japan with squally,
heavy rains. Friday afternoon, EDT, Linfa reached southwestern Japan
spreading high winds and torrential rains before it. At Muruoto
Misaki, a headland on Shikoku Island, sustained winds reached at least
70 mph; gusts undoubtedly topped hurricane strength. As for rainfall,
there was plenty. At Owase on the Kii Peninsula of Honshu, rainfall
was 18.2 inches with 12 hours, and 19.6 inches in all. Elsewhere,
rainfall of 8.5 inches within 24 hours was registered at Omaezaki. In
all, rainfall was 8.3 inches at Izuhara, and 7.0 inches at Saigo.
The area of Linfa's birth, the South China west of northern Luzon
Island, Philippines, may soon play host to another tropical storm.
Indeed, weather forecasters Saturday eyed a gathering of heavy
convective rains astride the Intertropical Convergence, and deemed
the potential for tropical cyclone growth to be good.
Abnormal springtime warmth spread widely across the United Kingdom
and Ireland on Friday. Indeed, much of the region climbed into the
70s. At London's Heathrow airport, the 81-degree top reading far
surpassed the average high of 65. Other warm spots in England included
Boscombe Down and Herstmonceux which reached 78 and 77 degrees,
respectively. In Ireland, Shannon peaked at 77 and Dublin rose to 72.
Belfast, Northern Ireland, registered a high of 75 degrees versus an
average high of 61. Saturday, meantime, some of these sites were
matching Friday's marks, and one, London, reached 82 degrees at
midday.
