[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Friday, May 30

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Fri May 30 2003 - 10:10:01 EDT

May 30, 2003 9:47 a.m.

Friday, Linfa was a strong tropical storm looming off
southwestern Japan. Before daybreak, EDT, Linfa lay over the
northwestern Philippine Sea about 90 miles east of Naze, Amami O
Shima, Japan. The storm swept northwards at 20 mph packing highest
sustained winds of 70 mph. Linfa was forecast to cross land in
southwestern Japan early Saturday, local time. Along with potentially-
damaging winds near landfall, potential was for excessive rains along
southeastern slopes of Kyushu and Shikoku, two of Japan's main
islands.

Friday, Tropical Storm Linfa brushed the island of Minamidaito.
Along with some gales, rainfall within 48 hours was 5.8 inches.
Meantime, Linfa interacted with a mid-latitude trough aloft to unleash
excessive rains in southeastern Korea and southwestern Japan. In
Korea, rainfall of 4 to 8 inches washed a wide area. Sogwip'o and
Cheju, towns on the island of Cheju, observed rainfall of 7.0 inches,
most of which fell within 6 hours. Rainfall was 6.3 inches at Pusan,
and 5.5 inches at Ulsan.

Searing heat out of the eastern Sahara met a cold front off the
eastern Mediterranean Sea Thursday. The blistering heat hiked
temperatures to near 120 degrees -- Egypt's Kharga Oasis reached 119
-- and nearly 115 degrees (114) at El 'Arish near the Mediterranean
shore. The clash of air masses led to much blowing dust than lingered
well into the day Friday as it wafted into the Mideast. In much of
Jordan including Amman, visibility was down to a few hundred yards.
At Taraif, in northwestern Saudi Arabia, southerly winds well ahead
of the cold front rose to gale strength Friday; the blowing dust cut
visibility to nil. Likewise, in Syria, 50-mph gusts whipped up choking
dust.

Summery warmth spread widely across England and Wales Thursday as
afternoon readings were generally in the lower and middle 70s. Some
places, including London, reached the upper 70s. The 78-degree high at
the city's Heathrow airport was well above the average high of 65.
Climatologically, the warmest time of the year here is the second half
of July and the start of August when the average high is in the lower
70s, so Thursday would have been a warm day even for the height of
summer. Early Friday afternoon, the picture was much the same.
