Linfa regained tropical storm status on Thursday as headed away
from the Philippines and toward western Japan. The storm, with top
sustained winds of 40 mph, was centered about 250 miles to the
south-southwest of Naha, Okinawa. The storm was headed to the
north-northeast at 13 mph, and some further strengthening was
forecast. This path would skirt Japan's Ryukyu islands, and bring the
storm into the southwestern mainland of Japan on Friday. While winds
will not be much of a concern, torrential rainfall is possible near
and to the east of Linfa's path. Rainfall in the wake of Linfa was
very impressive over the Philippines. At Dagupan, rainfall was 24.8
inches within twelve hours, and more than 30 inches since the start of
the week. At Baguio, rainfall was about 17 inches for the week
including 12 inches within a 24-hour stretch. Iba had 11.4 inches
within two days, and Linfa's output over greater Manila included
amounts above one foot. Undoubtedly, the storm left flooding in its
wake along with mudslides over ash-covered slopes near the volcano,
Pinatubo.

High winds gusting 50 to 65 mph swept Narssarssuaq, southern
Greenland, Wednesday.

A deadly heat wave has lately gripped southeastern India and kept
a tight hold on the area Wednesday. In the hard-hit state of Andra
Pradesh, high temperatures of 115 degrees were set near the sea at
Nellore and Kakinada, well above the normal high of about 100
degrees. Thursday had stifling heat again at Nellore, and the
temperature soared to 115 degrees. At Kakinada, some "cooling" took
place Thursday. The high temperature there was 105.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has sweltered under high heat lately. The
capital city reached 108 degrees both Tuesday and Wednesday whereas
the average high was 103. More notable, however, was the temperature
Tuesday night to Wednesday morning -- there were no hourly readings
below 95 degrees. The average low here in late May is 74 degrees.

Another hot spot recently has been Tel-Aviv, Israel. On Thursday,
the temperature soared to 106 degrees. Normal highs there are near 84
degrees this time of year. This May has had several very hot days,
and has averaged close to 5 degrees above normal.

In far northern Quebec, Canada, the temperature soared to at least
73 degrees Wednesday afternoon at Kuujjuaq, or nearly 30 degrees above
average. It was also a warm day in Schefferville, Quebec, and in
Labrador, Newfoundland, at Churchill Falls and Wabush; all three sites
were much warmer than usual in reaching the middle 70s.
