A MINI tornado has left a trail of destruction in its path after blowing
through northern Victoria last night.

More than 150 houses were damaged in Bendigo when wind up to 160km/h passed
through the regional city just before 8pm.

Weather bureau technical officer Mario Gonzalez said wind ranged between
100 and 160km/h.

"It certainly was a mini tornado but it was concentrated to a very small
area," he said.

"That area was severely damaged, with ten or so houses almost totally
destroyed," he said.

"Another 45 to 50 houses sustained varying degrees of damage.

"On top of that we have lots of trees down across houses and roofs and
roads and cars, lots of flash flooding and power lines down."
