[STORMREPORTS] Heavy rains and wind. Smithsburg, MD 2 NE

Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the high and damp desert of the Mid
Atlantic. I was sitting back last night as the winds were buffeting my
homestead in the hills thinking to myself, "I wonder what would make this
glorious evening of wind blown destruction even better?". And then came the
rain. Once the rain stopped, the 24 hour rain total was 3.04 inches. It could
have been worse. Areas on the other side of the mountain received more than 4
inches of rain. The three plus inches of rain was more than enough coupled
with the strong winds to bring trees down. I lost a tree on my 3 acres in the
hills. Just after noon (12:01 to be exact) the wind gusted out of the E at 57
mph. The 24 hour average wind was a tropical storm-like 34.2 mph. This is the
third consecutive day (sixth out of the last eight) with wind gusts over 45
mph. With the winds gusting over 50 mph for a good portion of the day and the
fact the front of the house is facing east, we had to use the basement door
go get out of the house because the front and side doors were nearly
impossible to open.
The storm total was the most rainfall in a 24 hour period since 3.16 inches
fell on May 7 & 8, 1998. Several roads were closed either due to fallen trees
or flooded roads. Ahhhhh May. What a wonderful month. Until later.
