"YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, March 28 (Itar-Tass) - A heavy snow-charged cyclone
raging over the Kuril Islands on Sunday tore up power transmission lines in
many places in Kunashir Island.

Some 800 residents were cut off from power supplied to apartment houses in
the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, a source at the Far Eastern regional
emergencies centre told Itar-Tass. Deep snow blocked roads and paralysed
motor traffic in and between towns and villages.

According to the source, the cyclone is leaving the Kurils toward the
Pacific Ocean. Repairmen teams try to restore broken power transmission
lines. Special snow-removing vehicles are operating on the roads."
