The first documented hurricane over the southern Atlantic Ocean,
at least since satellite observation in the mid-1960s, made landfall
late Saturday night, EST, on the shores of southern Brazil. The eye
of this rare and unprecedented hurricane made landfall near the border
between the states of Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, near the
beach resort of Laguna and Torres. Some reports of damage were already
reported as of Sunday morning, EST. According to the civil defense
officials of the states of Santa Catarina and Rio, there were reports
of homes damaged and trees down near the area of landfall. Several
hundred thousand people were also reportedly without power.
Unfortunately, the first death from this hurricane occurred when a
house collapsed on a small child, according to the Associated Press.
In addition, seven people were reportedly missing from a fishing
vessel that was battered by this extremely rare South Atlantic
hurricane.
The remnants of Cyclone Oscar, located approximately 625 miles
southwest of Australia's remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands, continue to
drift southwestward over the South Indian Ocean Sunday morning, EST.
The deep convection that was once associated with this cyclone has
weakened. Strong upper-level northwesterly winds are expected to
remain strong in the area, making an unfavorable environment for
re-generation.
A powerful storm pounded the southeastern coast of Greenland
Saturday night into Sunday morning, EST, with strong winds sustained
at 30-60 mph and heavy snow. Specifically, brutal weather was blasting
Ikermit with sustained winds near hurricane force and temperatures in
the lower teens, promoting wind chills in the -10 to -20 degree range.
Ikerasassuaq (Prince Christian Sound), off the southern tip of
Greenland, had winds sustained at 55 mph with higher gusts.
Rainfall totals of nearly 9.50 inches were reported in the remote
settlement of Mandora, Australia due to the remnants of Fay over the
past three days.
A storm skirting across the northern Manchurian Plain of
northeastern China brought strong winds and several inches of new snow
to that part of the nation, as well as the Amur and Chita regions of
southeastern Russia.
A storm system swirling off the southwestern coast of Portugal
pumped plenty of moisture across the southern portion of the nation,
eastward into Spain Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning, EST.
Rainfall totals across southern parts of Portugal and southern and
eastern areas of Spain averaged in the 0.50 to 1.00 inch range with
locally higher amounts. Specifically, 1.08 inches of rain fell in the
town of Tortosa in eastern Spain.
Canada's largest city has been unusually mild in recent days.
Friday was the second straight day to reach the 60s in Toronto,
Ontario, whereas average daily highs at this time of the year are in
the lower to middle 40s. Moreover, Friday's morning low at the Pearson
international airport was 48 degrees, or more than 20 degrees above
the mean daily low and even several degrees above the day's "normal"
high. Slightly cooler air filtered into Toronto Saturday with
afternoon temperatures in the middle 40s, right around the average for
this time of year.
