A South Atlantic Tropical Cyclone!?! Literature dealing with
tropical weather would agree: hurricanes are unknown over the southern
Atlantic Ocean. Yet, as of early Friday, a storm with a well-formed
eye about 300 miles east of southern Brazil has all the look of a
hurricane. If, indeed, this is a tropical cyclone, it did not begin in
the usual way; rather, it began as an ordinary "cool" trough that sat
over warm seas for a few days. The atmospheric setting must have been
"just right" to allow this trough to strengthen markedly while
altering from cool-core to warm-core, and thus tropical, in nature.
Cyclone Fay is on final approach to the northwestern shores of
Australia late Friday afternoon, EST, as it churns the nearby Indian
Ocean. Fay is centered 110 miles northeast of Port Hedland, Australia,
and within 15 miles east-northeast of Bedout Island. Highest sustained
winds now reckoned at more than 130 mph, the very dangerous Fay is
drifting southward at 4 to 5 mph. Fay is forecast to head towards the
south with a landfall in the state of Western Australia eastward from
Port Hedland within a few hours.
Soaking rains linked to Fay have washed Cygnet Bay, near the
northern tip of Dampier Land. Rainfall was 8.3 inches within 48 hours
as of early Thursday, local time, followed by another 1.9 inches in
the following 24 hours. Bedout Island, meantime, observed gales
Friday with speeds above 45 mph as of evening.
Powerful Cyclone Oscar is over the eastern South Indian Ocean.
Late Friday morning, EST, Oscar is far from any land -- Australia's
remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands are about 500 miles to its northeast.
It's just as well, as Oscar packs highest sustained winds of 130 mph;
it's crawling along at only 4-5 mph to the southwest. Oscar will be of
no threat to any land anytime soon.
A fearsome early-spring storm has raked West Greenland including
the capital, Godthab (or Nuuk). Winds Thursday and again Friday rose
in gust to between 75 and 85 mph. Snow squalls were whipped into
blinding whiteouts.
Southeast Asia has sweltered lately, and Friday's heat was no
exception. Mynamar (Burma) saw 108 degrees at Monywa. In Thailand,
104 degrees was reached at Kanchanaburi, Chaiyaphum, Nan, Loei and
Khon Kaen. Laos was about as hot, as Luang Prabang hit 103.
It's been a cold month on the southwestern shores of Hudson Bay,
Canada, and Friday was no different. Churchill, Manitoba, set a
morning low of 25 degrees below zero and was no warmer than minus-4
degrees as of late afternoon. Thursday was colder yet with afternoon
temperatures in the 20s below zero. An average day here in late March
would have a high near plus-10 and a low of minus-8 degrees. Through
Thursday, the month's average temperature was more than 11 degrees
below the mean.
Canada's largest city, meanwhile, has been unusually mild in
recent days. Friday was the second straight day to reach the 60s in
Toronto, Ontario, whereas average daily highs at this time of the year
are in the lower to middle 40s. Moreover, Friday's morning low at the
Pearson international airport was 48 degrees, or more than 20 degrees
above the mean daily low and even several degrees above the day's
"normal" high.
