March 25, 2004 6:04 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone Fay is lurking off northwestern Australia and is
threatening to land in the state of Western Australia. Late Thursday
afternoon, EST, Fay holds top sustained winds of about 85 mph.
Centered less than 130 miles west-southwest of Broome, Western
Australia, Fay is moving toward the west-southwest at 8 mph. The
cyclone is forecast to turn southward and make landfall near the
eastern end of the Eighty Mile Beach within 24 hours with little
change in strength beforehand.

Soaking rains linked to Fay have washed Cygnet Bay, near the
northern tip of Dampier Land. Rainfall was 8.3 inches within 48 hours
as of early Thursday, local time.

A second tropical cyclone named Oscar, as of late Thursday
morning, EST, is over the South Indian Ocean, nearest land being
Australia's remote Cocos (Keeling) Islands some 400 miles to the
northeast. The storm holds top sustained winds of 80 mph; it is headed
towards the southwest at 8 mph. Further strengthening on an
open-water, southwesterly tack is forecast for the next two days.

High winds belted many of the tiny, storm-prone islands off
British Columbia, Canada, Thursday. Both Solander Island and Sartine
Island, for example, weathered sustained winds 50-55 mph and gusts to
almost 70 mph.

For a second-straight day, much of middle South America sweltered
in summery heat Thursday despite calendars showing it to be early
fall. Among the hottest spots with respect to normal were Buenos
Aires, Argentina, and Montevideo, Uruguay. At the Ezeiza airport among
Buenos Aires' southern suburbs, the temperature reached 91 degrees.
The same mark was notched at the Carrasco airport near Montevideo.
Average daily highs in late March are in the middle to upper 70s in
both cities.

A mighty snow storm has left a deep mantle of fresh snow atop the
northern Alps. Germany's high spot, Zugspitze, which has a weather
station near its top, picked up 65 fresh inches of snow having water
equivalent of of nearly 6 inches in the past 60 hours. In Austria,
recent snowfall was about three feet atop Sonnblick.
