Cyclone Fay Turns Back Towards WA Coast

SEVERE Tropical Cyclone Fay turned back towards the
Western Australian coast today, prompting new warnings
to coastal communities.
The cyclone was downgraded from a category five to a
category four system overnight, and is today expected
to begin moving south.
The Bureau of Meteorology yesterday cancelled all
warnings associated with Fay, as the cyclone began
moving west – away from populated areas of the
state's north.
However, a new cyclone watch advisory for coastal
and island communities between Cape Leveque and Mardie,
along the Pilbara coast, was issued this afternoon.
"Severe Tropical Cyclone Fay is expected to begin
moving southwards over the next 6 to 12 hours,"
the bureau said.
"Gales are not expected in coastal areas within the
next 24 hours, however gales could develop within
48 hours."
At midday Fay was about 470km north-northwest of
Broome and 700km north-northeast of Port Hedland.
It was almost stationary.
Winds at the cyclone's centre were estimated to be
240kph.
