Tropical Cyclone Fay is over the Timor Sea near northwestern
Australia. Late Thursday afternoon, EST, Fay is centered 345 miles
west-southwest of Darwin, Northern Territory, and 175 miles
north-northeast of Kuri Bay, Western Australia. Drifting westward at
3-4 mph, Fay has highest sustained winds of 85 mph. Fay is forecast to
strengthen further on a southwestward heading during the next 24-48
hours. Such a path would roughly parallel the coast of northwestern
Australia and, thus, keep the storm's core over water. A southward
movement, however, could bring severe and damaging weather to land.
An un-named tropical storm, meanwhile, seems to be aiming for the
Philippines. Late Thursday afternoon, EST, the storm was over the
Philippine Sea with its center about 140 miles east of southern Samar
Island, Philippines, and 515 miles east-southeast of Manila. With top
sustained winds of 40 mph, the storm is moving northwestward at 17
mph. Some increase in strength is forecast before this cyclone reaches
the central or northern Philippines late Friday or Saturday, local
time.
Harsh cold continued over the far north of Siberian Russia into
Thursday morning. Zhilinda, for a third straight night had lows that
were about 30 degrees below average for the date. Lows the past three
nights were 58, 60 and 61 degrees below zero.
Soaking rains hit parts of far southern Bolivia Wednesday to
Thursday. One especially rainy spot was Yacuiba where rainfall was
nearly 5.5 inches within 24 hours.
On-and-off cloudbursts have pelted portions of northern Brazil
this midweek. At Tracuateua, a town a little more than 100 miles
east-northeast of Belem, rainfall was 10.1 inches within 54 hours as
of Thursday afternoon.
