Tropical Cyclone Fay is over the Timor Sea between northwestern
Australia and the island of Timor. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Fay
is located 300 miles west of Darwin, Northern Territory. Drifting
lazily towards the west-southwest at 4-5 mph, Fay has highest
sustained winds slightly above 50 mph. Fay is forecast to head mostly
westwards for the next 24-48 hours. Such a path would be at sea
between Australia and the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. Fay may
strengthen markedly.
A western Pacific tropical depression is near the islands of
Palau. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, the low is centered about 125
miles west-southwest of Koror, Palau, with highest sustained winds a
little below 30 mph. It is forecast to head pretty much towards the
northwest over the next day or two while gaining tropical storm
status. Such a path would lead to a landfall from the east in central
Philippines.
Tuesday into Wednesday, harsh arctic cold eased somewhat over the
Arctic Archipelago of Canada's high north. Tuesday, though, the
day-time high at Eureka on the island of Ellesmere was 51 degrees
below zero versus a mean daily high of 29 below. The temperature
slowly climbed overnight.
Cairns, on the tropical shores of Queensland, Australia, has had
a washing so far this week. Rainfall since Sunday has been at least
9.6 inches.
Wednesday, springlike warmth was felt over most of Japan. In
northern Honshu, the main island, Miyako reached 73 degrees, or more
than 25 degrees above average. Also departing by at least 25 degrees
was Aomori with 68 degrees.
Wednesday, spring seemed to blossom early over northwestern Europe.
By mid afternoon, much of Germany, Belgium and France had warmed to at
least 70 degrees with 75 degrees in a few warm spots. This was 20 to
25 degrees above mean daily highs for mid month.
It's been unseasonably hot in much of northwestern Mexico lately,
and Wednesday was no exception. In Sonora, the city of Hermosillo was
near 100 degrees at midafternoon after reaching 98 degrees on Tuesday.
An average day near the middle of March would have a high in the lower
80s, but summertime heat is no stranger here as June, July, August and
September each have an average high above 100 degrees.
In Tashkent, Uzbekistan, March began unseasonably warm and largely
dry, but the weather has turned quite wet and chilly in recent days.
The first seven days of the month were nearly 19 degrees warmer than
average and were highlighted by an 88-degree high on the 7th.
Wednesday, however, saw rain, a little snow and temperatures in the
30s. The high of 38 degrees was 15 degrees below the mean daily high.
Moreover, it was the fifth straight day with rain. Rainfall during
this span was 2.5 inches or roughly the amount that one would expect
in all of March.
