Cyclone Gafilo has dissipated over southern Madagascar, the
island that it twice made landfall over beginning last weekend.
There is still some potential for its lingering trough to rise anew
over the Indian Ocean near southern Madagascar.
Tropical Cyclone Nicky-Helma dissipated over the eastern South
Indian Ocean early Sunday. The storm never affected any land areas,
and was more than 1100 miles southwest of Australia's Cocos Islands
when it dissipated.
Wednesday, the temperature dipped 80 degrees below zero at
Russia's Vostok base in Antarctica, the first such reading of the
year. There followed respective lows of minus-81, minus-85 and
minus-84 as of Saturday morning. Saturday evening, local time,
minus-80 was reached once again. By Sunday, a warmup was underway;
the afternoon temperature soared to minus-59.
Friday and Saturday were even colder than usual in parts of
northwestern and north-central Russia. Dudinka, for example, set
respective highs of minus-23 and minus-26 degrees. These marks were
about 20 degrees below the daily mean maximum and at least 5 degrees
under the average low for the date. Friday's morning low was 38
degrees below zero, or 20 degrees below "normal". Westward of the
northern Ural Mountains, Vorkuta's Friday morning low and afternoon
high were minus-24 and minus-19 degrees, respectively, whereas an
average day near the middle of March would have a minimum of plus-1
and a maximum of 14 above zero.
A powerful storm battered parts of the Britsh Isles with high
winds Sunday. At Southhampton, England, wind gusts reached 59 mph
around noon Sunday. Culdrose had even higher wind gusts, topping out
at 61 mph. Many other sites, including London, reported wind gusts
over 40 mph. The strong south and southwesterly winds brought mild
air into the region, and most places had temperatures in the 50s
Sunday morning. In contrast, the previous week was quite chilly
throughout the British Isles, with temperatures in the 30s and 40s,
and snow in many areas.
