Friday, Cyclone Gafilo, stuck over far-southeastern Madagascar,
is dissipating as a named tropical cyclone. This long-traveled storm,
once the equal to a Category-five hurricane, twice made landfall over
the big island and has washed much of it with torrential rains for
nearly one week.
Friday, Cyclone Nicky-Helma, still over the open Indian Ocean, has
begun to fade in strength. Late Friday morning, EST, this cyclone is
over the eastern South Indian Ocean almost 950 miles southwest of
Australia's Cocos Islands. It is drifting towards the west-southwest
at 8 mph with highest sustained winds between 60 and 65 mph. This
storm is of no immediate threat to any land.
A storm shedding cold rain and wet snow chilled much of Ireland
and the United Kingdom Thursday into Friday. Friday morning,
about one inch of snow greeted early risers in greater London, and
like falls of snow were observed from much of the English Midland.
Gales Thursday into Thursday night swept shores of western Great
Britain and much of Ireland. Snow also whitened parts of Ireland
including the Connaught airport in the northwest.
Two day of on-and-off downpour have, as of Friday, left rainfall
of 7.0 inches at Auki, Malaita, one of the Solomon Islands.
Wednesday, the temperature dipped 80 degrees below zero at
Russia's Vostok base in Antarctica, the first such reading of the
year. Thursday's low was minus-81 degrees; Friday's was even lower:
minus-85.
A small area of central Mexico was doused by unusually heavy rain
for late winter Thursday to early Friday. In the city of Guanajuato,
24-hour rainfall was 1.1 inches. The average rainfall for all of March
in this area is only about 0.4 of an inch as measured in nearby Leon.
Friday was even colder than usual in parts of northwestern and
north-central Russia. Dudinka, for example, set a high of minus-23
degrees. This mark was about 20 degrees below the daily mean maximum
and even 5 degrees under the average low for the date. Friday's
morning low was 38 degrees below zero, or 20 degrees below "normal".
Westward, Vorkuta's morning low and afternoon high were minus-24 and
minus-19 degrees, respectively, whereas an average day near the middle
of March would have a minimum of plus-1 and a maximum of 14 above zero.
