From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Thu Mar 11 2004 - 19:40:01 EST

March 11, 2004 6:41 p.m.

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, was no colder than 36 degrees Tuesday
night, and reached 38 degrees early Wednesday. What a switch by
daybreak, Thursday! The day began 11 degrees below zero with wind
chill below -35 degrees. Harsher still was early-morning chill on
Baffin Island. The territorial capital of Nunavut, Iqaluit, was as
cold as 42 degrees below zero, and wind chill bottomed near 80
below.

Thursday, Cyclone Gafilo is still over Madagascar. Late Thursday
afternoon, EST, the core of Gafilo is within 25 miles north-northwest
of Tolanaro with highest sustained winds down to less than 30 mph;
it's drifting towards the south at 2 mph. Within 6 to 12 hours, Gafilo
will slip back out to sea.

Thursday, Cyclone Nicky-Helma is over the eastern South Indian
Ocean far from any land. Late Thursday morning, EST, this storm holds
highest sustained winds of 75 mph. Located nearly 800 miles southwest
of Australia's remote Cocos Islands, Nicky-Helma is headed towards
the southwest at 10 mph. This storm is of no immediate threat to any
land.

High winds swept Ireland early Thursday. At the Connaught airport,
winds gusted 40-55 mph amidst a fall of wet snow and rain. A cold,
soaking rain at Cork was driven before winds often topping 50 mph.
Far to the northwest, the same sprawling storm raked Iceland,
unleashing hurricane gusts at Keflavik, and sustained 70-mph winds at
Heimaey.

So far, March has been unusually warm throughout the Mideast.
Northern Iran has been warmest with respect to average. In Tehran,
for example, the average temperature through Wednesday was more than
18 degrees above the climatological mean.

Two separate downpours left a total of 5.9 inches of rain within
45 hours Thursday to Friday, local time, at Auki on Malaita, one of
the Solomon Islands.

Wednesday, the temperature dipped 80 degrees below zero at
Russia's Vostok base in Antarctica, the first such reading of the
year. Thursday's low was minus-81 degrees, and the temperature dropped
to minus-82 degrees early Friday, local time.
