Chinook warming early this week yielded Tuesday night to a
shocking cold blast over north-central Canada. At Collins Bay,
Saskatchewan, Tuesday high was 46, or 30 degrees above average. But,
about 15 hours after the high was reached, the temperature dipped 25
degrees below zero, and 20 degrees below average -- a 71 degree
nose dive! The story was much the same at Key Lake, SK: a high of 50
degrees, rare winter rain, and then a flash deep-freeze to -18
degrees by daybreak Wednesday. Far to the southwest, the jolt was
less severe, but still striking. Calgary, Alberta, warmed Tuesday to
a record-tying 62 degrees. Five hours later, a snow squall left
nearly an inch of snow.
Tropical Cyclone Gafilo is crossing Madagascar once again; this
time in the south. Over the middle south of the island as of late
Wednesday afternoon, EST, Gafilo has highest sustained winds of about
50 mph; it's drifting towards the south-southeast at 6 mph. This
weakened storm will most likely return to sea via the southeastern
shores of this big island, triggering more torrential rains until it
drifts clear of land.
Heavy to excessive rains have splashed most of Madagascar owing
to the tropical cyclone, Gafilo. One city, Tolanaro, in the far
south, picked up 14.7 inches of rain within 60 hours, and as Gafilo
neared from the northwest, winds rose to storm strength Wednesday.
Tropical Cyclone Nicky is over the eastern South Indian Ocean far
from any land. As of late Wednesday morning, EST, Nicky holds highest
sustained winds of 75 mph about a center which is more than 500 miles
southwest of Australia's remote Cocos Islands. Only open seas are in
this storm's forecast path, however, and a weakening trend seems set
to begin.
Parts of northwestern Mexico have been rather hot during the
first half of the week. In Sonora, the city of Hermosillo soared to
99 degrees on Tuesday, or almost 20 degrees above the daily mean.
Wednesday afternoon saw temperatures rising into the middle 90s.
Searing heat baked some southern areas of Guatemala on Tuesday.
The coastal town of San Jose soared to 103 degrees. It was the second
straight day to have 100-degree heat here.
A strong cold front ended hot weather in Sydney, Australia, this
midweek. Whereas Tuesday reached 104 degrees, Wednesday saw
temperatures hover in the upper 60s and lower 70s. At one point on
Wednesday the temperature was 36 degrees lower than at the same time
on Tuesday.
