Early Monday morning, EST, the weakening tropical cyclone,
Gafilo, is near the western shore of Madagascar following Sunday
morning's destructive landfall over the island's northeast. Highest
winds about Gafilo are down to 60 to 65 mph as the storm heads
towards the southwest at 17 to 18 mph. Gafilo likely will slip back
out to sea, at least briefly, and could strengthen substantially
before hooking back towards land in southwestern Madagascar.
A tropical low over the eastern South Indian Ocean is a candidate
to become a named tropical cyclone within a day or two.
Monday, widespread dust clouds stretched over sub-Saharan Africa
for a third-straight day. The area of dust was bounded by Sudan and
Central African Republic in the east, and the Atlantic Ocean
including the Gulf of Guinea in the south and west. The high winds
that last week stirred up the dust over the Saharan have, for the
most part, dissipated, leaving the fine, air-borne dust to slowly
settle out down wind.
Monday, a wind and dust storm was getting underway in western
Mongolia and nearby Xinjiang, China. At Umnu-Gobi, Mongolia, sustained
winds above 60 mph were clocked Monday evening, local time.
Pockets of harsh arctic cold have lately hovered over the far
north of Canada, mostly in Nunavut Territory. Friday and Saturday,
Pelly Bay on a peninsula of the mainland topped out between 40 and 45
degrees below zero following lows nearly 60 below. Highs and lows were
30 to 35 degrees below average. Sunday, Isachsen, on Ellef Ringnes
Island, set a high of 42 below.
