[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Sunday, Mar 07

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Sun Mar 07 2004 - 19:40:00 EST

March 7, 2004 4:06 p.m.

Early Sunday morning, local time, severe Tropical Cyclone Gafilo
stormed ashore near Antalaha in northeastern Madagascar. At the time
of landfall, Gafilo packed highest sustained winds that may have
topped 150 mph making it a potentially devastating blow.

Sunday afternoon, EST, the core of Cyclone Gafilo is inland
and some 185 miles northeast of Antananarivo, Madagascar. Highest
winds about Gafilo have dropped to about 85 mph, still a strong
cyclone after being over mountainous land for more than 12 hours.
The storm is headed towards the southwest at 16 mph. Without doubt,
Gafilo will weaken further over land for at least another day or so.
It could find its way over waters of the Mozambique Channel given
continued southwesterly movement.

Saturday and Sunday, thick air-borne dust spanned the breadth of
Saharan and sub-Saharan Africa, even reaching into the Atlantic Ocean
including the Gulf of Guinea and Bight of Benin -- an east-west spread
of some 4000 miles! Most of this dust had been raised earlier in the
week and has since wafted down wind -- mostly to the south and west,
but Sudan's contribution happened Saturday as strong winds behind a
cold front displaced 100-degree heat over open desert. Unusual was
the penetration Sunday of dust into rainy, tropical lands of Cameroon
and the Central African Republic.

Sunday, the Amundsen-Scott station at the South Pole reached
70 degrees below zero for the first time since October 19th of last
year. Daylight is fast fading, and average daily temperature falls
fast in answer. Still, -70 is not far below the mean low for the
date, and for the month as a whole, it's -73.

Strong winds buffeted Tbilisi, Georgia, Friday through Saturday.
During this time, sustained winds were mostly 35-45 mph while peak
gusts reached 67 mph. Strong winds also reached into Iran where
Ardebil had wind sustained at 50 mph and visibility a quarter of a
mile in blowing dust.

Saturday, 90-degree heat came early to the southern Garagum, or
Black Desert, of Turkmenistan. Ashgabat, the capital city, topped out
at 98 degrees, or more than 40 degrees above the mean daily high.
Sunday, this unusual warmth shifted eastwards. The Uzbekistan
capital, Toshkent (Tashkent), topped out 39 degrees above average in
reaching 88.
