From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Fri Mar 05 2004 - 19:40:01 EST

March 5, 2004 5:40 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone Gafilo is now a powerful storm over the South
Indian Ocean. Late Friday afternoon, EST, Gafilo's eye is 305 miles
east of Antalaha, Madagascar. Packing highest sustained winds of about
145 mph, Gafilo is moving towards the southwest at 10 mph. After 24 to
30 hours, Gafilo will be of waxing threat to northeastern Madagascar
if it conforms to its forecast path.

Friday, Saharan dust spread in widespread clouds for more than
300 miles. From Niger and Nigeria in the east, this belt of cloud
reached westward to at least Cape Verde Islands, at least 500 miles
west of Africa. Visibility to a few hundred meters was observed on
the island of Sal. The dust also wafted unusually far southward to
the green, tropical shores of the Bight of Benin.

Thursday night and Friday, snow fell widely over South Korea. The
storm dumped one-half foot of snow over Seoul. Taejon, however, was
buried beneath at least 17 inches of heavy, wet snow having water
equivalent of nearly three inches. Chonju also had a heavy fall of
wet snow.

Windswept and heavy showers pelted the southernmost Lesser
Antilles Thursday to Friday. Rainfall was unusually heavy for March in
Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao, all islands of the Netherlands. In Aruba,
24-hour rainfall ended Friday morning was 2.3 inches or more than
three-fold the March average which is about 0.7 of an inch. Moreover,
winds gusting 30-35 mph accompanied the heaviest showers. At the
Flamingo Field airport on Bonaire, rainfall was 1.6 inches during the
same time, and highest wind gusts were almost 45 mph. The story was
similar on Curacao where rainfall was a more modest 0.9 of an inch and
top gusts of 40 mph were clocked.

Locally heavy rain fell on greater Surabaya, island of Java,
Indonesia, Thursday to Friday, local time. At the port of Tanjung
Perak, cloudbursts unloaded almost 6.8 inches of rain within 24 hours.
