"Downtown Redding didn't know what hit it early Thursday afternoon.
Winds ripped up the Cascade Theatre roof and pummeled other buildings, cars
and trees nearby, witnesses said.
"There was no funnel cloud," said Carol Skill, project coordinator at
Jefferson Public Radio, whose studio is in the Cascade Theatre building.
"But if wind had texture, you could see it. There was rain and hail and
chunky stuff in it. There were about five or six of us standing there (in
the JPR offices) watching it with our mouths open."
The National Weather Service in Sacramento might send a forecaster to town
today to find out whether this mystery wind was a "gustnado" or a genuine
tornado.
The visiting meteorologist will inspect damage and talk to witnesses, said
Jim Mathews, a National Weather Service forecaster in Sacramento.
Forecasters will also consult radar images for a tornado's signature in the
powerful thunderstorms that socked Redding and Shasta Lake on Thursday.
Thursday's possible tornado in downtown Redding would be Shasta County's
first since 1950 if it passes meteorological muster as the real deal,
records show."
