Tropical Cyclone Ivy is over the South Pacific Ocean southeast of
New Caledonia leaving Vanuatu in its wake. Late Friday afternoon, EST,
the eye of Ivy is 370 miles southeast of Noumea, New Caledonia, and
more than 550 miles south-southeast of Port-Vila, Vanuatu. Ivy, headed
towards the southeast at 22 mph, has highest sustained winds of 115
mph. A path towards the south-southeast is foreseen for the next 24-36
hours. On this course, Ivy would cross northern and eastern parts of
New Zealand's North Island as a weakening, but still dangerous
cyclone Saturday to Saturday night, EST.
Weather observations from Vanuatu, while sketchy, hint at a severe
pounding at the hands of Cyclone Ivy. Highest sustained winds reported
were 80 mph on the island of Anatom, but winds may have topped 100 mph.
Rainfall, meantime, topped 22 inches within 72 hours at Port-Vila.
Another tropical cyclone is gaining strength, meanwhile, off
northwestern Australia. Tropical Cyclone Monty is 70 miles
north-northwest of Port Hedland with highest sustained winds of 55-60
mph as of late Friday afternoon, EST. Monty is drifting towards the
west at 8 mph. The cyclone is forecast to skirt the northwestern coast
of Australia along a west-southwestward track for the next day or two.
Soaking rains unrelated to Monty doused the Gove Peninsula of
Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, Australia, late in the week. Rainfall
was 6.0 inches within 36 hours as of Friday evening, local time.
A strong northerly wind flow Wednesday through Friday swept over
the United Kingdom and Ireland bound for western Europe. Squally
bursts of snow were widespread leaving widespread whitenings, some of
an inch or two. Snowfall was about 5 inches over two days at Connaught,
Ireland. Snow Friday lay 6 inches deep at Glenlivet and Aviemore,
Scotland, and 5 inches at Aberdeen. Rare snow whitened the Channel
Islands off northern France; 2 inches mantled Guernsey. Farther south,
bursts of snow, rain and small, soft hail spewed from thunderstorms
along the Costa Verde and the lower Cordillera Cantabrica of northern
Spain. Snow dusted some of northern and western France amounting
locally to an inch or more.
Two days of heavy snow along the Appennini of peninsular Italy
left 33 fresh inches atop Monte Terminillo, which is 6150 feet
above sea level.
Heavy rain, some from soaking thunderstorms, pelted some areas in
northern Honduras on Thursday. The seaside city of La Ceiba collected
5.3 inches of rain within 24 hours.
Friday, northwestern Turkey warmed to 65 to 75 degrees, or up to
25 degrees above average for the time of year. Some of these some
spots only two weeks ago saw one to two feet of snowfall in a
blizzard.
The week is coming to a very wet end in northeastern South
Africa. Near the city of Tzaneen, for example, rainfall was about 4.1
inches within 36 hours ended early Friday evening, local time, at
Grenshoek. In Oudestad, 72-hour rainfall to early Friday afternoon
was 7.1 inches.
Friday, searing, summery heat baked portions of northeastern
Africa. The greatest temperature deviations from average were
registered from southern and eastern Libya to Egypt. In Libya, highs
were 99 and 97 degrees, respectively, at the Gialo oil field and in
Giarabub; these marks were greater than average by almost 25 degrees.
In Egypt, 98-degree highs were set at Siwa, Dakhla Oasis and El Kharga
whereas an average day near the end of February would have highs in
the middle to upper 70s in these sites.
