February 26, 2004 5:58 p.m.

Tropical Cyclone Ivy is pounding Vanuatu's southern islands having
already thrashed the island of Efate. Late Thursday afternoon, EST,
the eye of this South Pacific cyclone is 160 miles south-southeast of
Port-Vila, capital of Vanuatu, and 55 miles west-northwest of the
island of Anatom. Highest sustained winds about Ivy are 120 mph, so
nearby islands are being hammered. The storm is drifting towards the
south-southeast at 9 mph. A track towards the south-southeast is
foreseen for the next two days, and a slow weakening trend is
forecast. Rainy, windy and perhaps severe weather will overspread
France's Loyalty Islands, especially eastern ones, and southeastern
New Caledonia, although the storm's core will pass to the east.

Weather observations from Vanuatu, while sketchy, hint at a severe
pounding at the hands of Cyclone Ivy. Highest sustained winds reported
were 80 mph, but winds may have topped 100 mph. Rainfall, meantime,
was about 17 inches within two days.

Wednesday and again Thursday, winds gusting 50 to 70 mph have
swept through Nuuk (also known as Godthab), Greenland. These
southerly winds brought with them warming to nearly 50 degrees, also
rain instead of the more fitting snow.

A strong northerly wind flow Wednesday and Thursday swept over
the United Kingdom and Ireland bound for western Europe. Squally
bursts of snow Wednesday night and Thursday were widespread leaving
whitenings over much of the land. Snowfall was 3 inches at Connaught,
Ireland, and two inches at Belfast. Snow Thursday was 4 inches deep at
Aberdeen and Glenlivet, both in Scotland. High winds were clocked
including gusts above 60 mph at Sumburgh, Shetland. Faroe Islands,
north of Scotland, registered wind gusts above 85 mph.

Heavy rain, some from soaking thunderstorms, pelted some areas in
northern Honduras on Thursday. The seaside city of La Ceiba collected
3.1 inches of rain within 18 hours.

Thursday was unseasonably mild in most of Japan, but especially
so near Tokyo. A high of 68 degrees was registered in the city versus
an average late-February high near 50.
