Date: Wed Feb 25 2004 - 19:40:01 EST

February 25, 2004 6:30 p.m.

Clusters of thunderstorms brought drenching downpours to parts of
South Africa Tuesday and Wednesday. The nation's administrative
capital, Pretoria, received nearly three inches of rain.

Strong winds were howling across the western and southern coasts
of Greenland Wednesday. Nunarssuit was blasted with sustained winds
near 50 mph while Carey Island had sustained winds near 40 mph.

Powerful Tropical Cyclone Ivy is battering the South Pacific
island nation of Vanuatu. As of late Wednesday afternoon, EST, Ivy
holds highest sustained winds of 125 mph within its eye which is 20-25
miles south-southeast of Lamap, island of Malakula, and 75 miles
north-northwest of Port-Vila, Efate. The cyclone is drifting toward
the south-southeast at only 5 mph. Ivy is forecast to accelerate on a
south-southeastward heading through the next 48 hours. Further
strengthening is also foreseen into Thursday afternoon. On this
course, the powerful storm will pass directly over southern Vanuatu
with damaging winds and flooding rains virtually certain. Ivy will
also threaten New Caledonia and the Loyalty Islands Thursday and
Friday.

Rainfall was 4.8 inches within 48 hours as of early Wednesday,
local time, at Kuri Bay, northern Western Australia.

Sweltering heat has come early to southern Pakistan, especially
the southeast. On Wednesday, Nawabshah set a high of 100 degrees.
Nearly as hot were Pad Idan and Hyderabad, both of which soared to 98
degrees versus average highs in the lower and middle 80s.
