The highlands of eastern Turkey last weekend weathered a severe
winter storm. Heavy snows, whipped in some areas by blizzard winds,
were the storm's hallmark. Snowfall over Erzurum was nearly three
feet, and Bingol observed 29 inches of snow. Kars, which registered
about 6 inches of snow, showed winds of 30-60 mph and near-whiteouts.
The storm that instigated the blizzard over eastern Turkey Monday
blasted the Trans Caucasus with high winds. At Tblisi, Georgia, winds
to 70 mph were clocked. Winds at Baku, Azerbaijan, topped 50 mph.
A storm akin to an Atlantic nor'easter Sunday and Monday slammed
Hakkaido, the northernmost mainland of Japan. Abashiri and Asahikawa
each observed about two feet of fresh snow, and there was more than
one foot of new snow at Sapporo and Nemuro. What really highlighted
this storm, though, was the wind Monday: it blew 30 to 60 mph across
the areas most heavily blanketed by snow. Meantime, near the strait
between Hokkaido and Honshu, Japan's mainland, the storm dumped
mostly rain -- three inches of it at Hakodate -- but Monday brought
heavy snow showers and winds to 70 mph in gusts.
A strong late-winter storm Monday lashed Umnu-Gobi, Mongolia,
with 60-mph sustained winds and blowing dust.
Winds of 70-90 mph Monday blasted Russia's arctic islands of
Novaya Zemlya. At the time, temperatures were below zero.
A cold front Sunday broke the blistering heat wave that last week
had seared the south and southeast of Australia. Monday afternoon,
only a few 100-degree hot spot could be found on the continent, and
these were in Queensland.
A tropical cyclone over the southern Pacific Ocean is a growing
and potentially very dangerous storm. Late Monday afternoon, EST,
Tropical Cyclone Ivy is over the North Fiji Basin about 310 miles
north-northeast of Port-Vila, Vanuatu. Ivy is drifting towards the
west-northwest at 8 mph with highest sustained winds of 80 mph -- a 30
mph increase from earlier in the day. The cyclone, forecast to head
towards the west and southwest, holds the potential to threaten
Vanuatu within 24-36 hours; meaningful intensification is also
foreseen.
Some unusually heavy rain struck parts of northwestern Mexico
Sunday. On the northern shores of the Gulf of California, the town of
San Felipe was doused by about 0.9 of an inch of rain whereas the mean
February rainfall is only 0.1 of an inch.
Sunday was quite hot in a small part of southern Honduras. The
temperature surged to 103 degrees at Choluteca.
Soaking rains pelted some western shores of Greece Sunday to
Monday. At the Aktion airport near Preveza, rainfall was 4.1 inches
within 36 hours as of early Monday evening, local time; much of this,
almost 3.4 inches, came during 12 hours Sunday night. On the island of
Corfu, the story was similar. Here, Kerkira collected about 2.5 inches
of rain during the same 36-hour stretch.
