QUOTES:
Halifax invokes curfew over snow HALIFAX - The City of Halifax has invoked
a curfew for the first time in memory as it struggles to keep motorists and
pedestrians off streets clogged by a record-breaking snowfall. "We're
trying to impress on them the fact that this is a record-breaking storm.
This is a storm not of the decade or century; this is the most snowfall
we've had in recorded history." Residents spent the day trying to dig out
from the storm, which obliterated Halifax's old total storm record of 73.2
centimetres set in 1960. Haligonians weren't the only one hit.
Charlottetown received 74.4 cm, also a record, as Prince Edward Island
joined Nova Scotia in declaring a state of emergency.

Maritimers marvelled at it, dubbing the storm "White Juan," a reference to
September's weather bomb - hurricane Juan - which left Island and Nova
Scotia streets in a shambles. The blizzard, which brought gusts of wind
as high as 124 kilometres per hour, left its share of damage and
injury. In northern Cape Breton, a greenhouse roughly the size of a city
block collapsed under the weight of so much snow. In Prince Edward Island,
where 12,000 people were left in the dark by a power outage late yesterday,
utility crews managed to restore power to all but 300 customers by
Friday. Nova Scotia Power said "several thousand" customers were without
electricity this morning and blowing snow in the northeast was making it
difficult for crews to make repairs."
