Winchester (nw) VA
Temperatures, with downsloping NW winds, pushed Thursday temperatures
into the upper 50s. It was the warmest day in 5 1/2 weeks. It was 70 on
Jan 4th, and the next day the Arctic intrusion arrived.

It has been more than 2 weeks since our last snow. The water ladden snow
froze into ice, and has been reluctant to melt. That despite many sunny
days in the 40s the last 10 days. For the first time in over a month,
more than
1/2 of the yard is now free of snow.
==============
The pair of snow storms that brought snow to the beaches of NC north
into New England missed us totally, as forecast.
However, parts of NC & the tidewater of VA got several inches of snow
(west) & a few inches near the coast with the 1st storm. Thundersnow
(with actual C/G strikes) were reported in inland NC Sunday night. (See
Norfolk stories, below, bottom of 1st story.)
The 2nd storm left a decent precip field in NC into the Atlantic,
graizing the coastline from the Outer Banks north with snow. A few
locations got several inches, but most 2-4".
Norfolk got mostly rain with the second storm, and few locations in VA
reported measureable snow.
The snow was forecast to skirt the Baltimore Washington metro areas
Tuesday. Models Monday Night had it much closer than earlier thought. A
Winter Storm Watch was issued Monday about 9pm from Richmond to the
Washington southern suburbs to eastern MD into NJ.
The next morning, with low confidence in the forecast, the NWS had to
contend w/ the likelihood of measureable snow in the southeastern corner
of it's forecast area, light snow or flurries in the metro regions, & no
snow along and west of the Blue Ridge.
They decided to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for the previous watch
area. It was a good call.

Thursday marked the 25th anniversary of the 1979 Blizzard. It left up to
3 feet of snow in parts of VA, & drifts so high that some could not
escape their homes.
One who looks at the visble image would swear it is a hurricane they are
looking at.
Although I don't remember it as a blizzard, my notes tell me it was zero
to 6 above during the storm in which 11" fell. I remember feeling
jilted, since the cities got much more than we did. (We would get our
"big dump" a few years later, when 33" would fall Feb 10-12th, 1983).
The forecast was for 2-4", and a "traveler's advisory" was in affect.
(The younger ones here don't remember those, do you?)
