[STORMREPORTS] AccuWeather World Weather Highlights Tuesday, Feb 17

From: admin-auto{at}weathermatrix.net
Date: Tue Feb 17 2004 - 19:40:01 EST

February 17, 2004 5:42 p.m.

A violent storm Tuesday sent hurricane gusts tearing through the
Kuzbas coalfields of Siberian Russia. Sustained winds between 60 and
65 mph were clocked at the city of Novokuznetsk, and at Tashtyp. The
winds brought with them freakish warming of up to 40 degrees (and to
30 degrees above average) in 24 hours. At Chemal, in the Gorno-Altay,
a low of 48, or 40 degrees above average, preceded a balmy high of
58. Meantime, a sudden return of freezing cold was felt along much of
the storm's path, as were squally bursts of snow.

More high heat Tuesday in the desert heat of southern Australia.
Highs were at least 115 degrees in the state of South Australia,
Oodnadatta's 116 being amongst the top marks. It was at least 115
degrees at Marree, and with 114, Tarcoola was not far behind. Far to
the west, the city of Perth sweltered at 107 degrees owing to winds
off the western desert.

Monday saw abnormal warmth along the foot of Central Asia's
Zeravshan Range. Jizzakh, Uzbekistan, warmed to 80 degrees, or 35
degrees above the mean February high of 45.

Through the first 16 days of February, most of the United Kingdom
and Ireland were much milder than usual. In London, England, for
example, the average temperature during that span was about 8 degrees
above the mean. Most places in the British Isles, in fact, were
running 4-8 degrees above average through Monday.

Tuesday's high was minus-28 degrees at Indiga, northwestern
Russia. An average day near the middle of February would have a high
of 10 degrees above zero at this port town on the Barents Sea, so
Tuesday's mark was nearly 40 degrees below average.
