The fierce winter storm that slammed Greece and western Turkey
late this past week swept southeastward into the Middle East over the
weekend. Heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds pummelled the
coast of Lebanon and northern Israel while rain changed to snow in the
mountains. A foot of snow piled up in the mountains of Lebanon,
stopping traffic between Beirut and Damascus. Four inches or more of
snow fell around Jerusalem and eastward to Amman, Jordan.
Tropical Depression 01W is meandering over the Philippine Sea.
Centered on Sunday afternoon, EST, about 355 miles north-northwest of
Yap, Micronesia and 1070 miles east of Manila, Philippines, the
depression was most recently moving toward the southeast at a sluggish
3 mph and had top sustained winds of 35 mph. A sharp turn towards the
southwest is foreseen within the next 24 hours.
Casey, Antarctica was scoured by high winds over the weekend.
Constantly above 45 mph, the winds, at their peak, reached sustained
speeds of 86 mph.
