Winchester VA
The ice storm that struck last Friday set new daily records in VA,
mainly for rainfall. The Blacksburg office put a statement out on the
following broken daily rainfall records:
Blacksburg 1.70" (old 1.10" in 1955)
Danville 1.67" (old 1.67" in 1946)
Bluefield WV .89" (old .72" in 1986)
About 1.66" fell here on Fri, easily breaking the .95" from 1960.
Norfolk VA saw a record high of 75 (old record 74 in 1938), and a wild
swing in temperatures in the afternoon. It held in lower 70s during the
afternoon, then plunged to 42 in the evening, only to rebound to 62 by
11pm.

On Tuesday Feb 3rd, snow had accumulated 3.5" by the time WINC radio
took the official measurement. Heavy snow continued until about 10am,
when light freezing rain capped the snow.
A conserative estimate of 4 - 6" of snow before the changeover. When I
measured about 12:30pm, there was 3" on the ground,along w/ a 1/10" ice
glaize. Wwater content was .92".
On Thursday evening (Feb 5th) light snow & sleet begain, dusted the
ground then changed to moderate freezing rain. Temps fell to 27 then
rebounded slowly, to 30 overnight, to 32 Friday midday, and to 34 Fri
afternoon.
Ice accumulations here were 1/4", w/ only minor damage reported. In
areas about 30 miles west & northwest of my location, temps stayed below
32 for the event. I was disapointed about the coverage from the
weeklies & WHAG tv.
However, I spoke to someone who lives in Hampshire County WV, who spent
about 18 hours in the dark last weekend from 2 power outages. She said
that small limbs on trees were coated with ice over >2" thick (total
including the branch itself)!
Here, there was light rain between 4 & 6 am, that ended the event. For
the entire event 1.9" of rain/ freezing rain fell!
The Baltimore/ Washington radar recorded a 4.70" maximum. Since only a
little sleet fell locally, that total might be near a realistic total.
--------
On Thursday AM (Feb 12th), areas near the VA/NC border recieved a light
snowfall. In eastern areas (Norfolk) it quickly changed to rain. It also
changed to rain from east to west before ending in many areas.
We saw no snow from that event, and no major storms are in the 7 day
forecast. Today's mild weather (50's) should do wonders to melt snow &
make mud. That will be short lived. An Arctic intrusion will knock
Sundays temps to freezing, & perhaps to single digits Sunday night.
