Wild winter weather lately has whipped southeastern Europe and
western Turkey. Mountain winds to 100 mph in Bulgaria at midweek
heralded the oncoming storm which, Thursday night and Friday, got in
full swing over Greece and Turkey. The storm dropped a few inches of
wind-swept snow over Athens, Greece. Snow squalls with 60-plus mph
winds blasted some of the Aegean islands, and snow stuck near sea
level along the northern side of Crete. Northwestern Turkey,
meantime, weathered a blizzard. At Istanbul, snow and blowing snow
lasted at least 24 hours, and at its worst, the storm brought
near-zero visibility and winds of 50-55 mph. In Bandirma, winds of
55-65 mph churned snowfall of at least 16 inches, heaping it into
high drifts. A thoroughgoing "thump" of snow buried Bolu -- 28 inches
having 2.2 inches within little more than a day. In a striking side
note to this storm, the northeast of Turkey, near the Black Sea,
Friday afternoon warmed nearly to 70 degrees owing to the southerly
wind flow ahead of it.
A new tropical storm is spinning over the Philippine Sea. Late
Friday afternoon, EST, the un-named tropical storm is 435 miles
northwest of Yap, Micronesia. The storm's top sustained winds are 45
mph, and it is drifting towards the north-northwest at 10 mph. A
northwestward drift over open seas and moderate strengthening are
forecast for the next 24-48 hours.
It's been unusually mild in Iceland in recent days. Friday, for
example, saw the temperature rise to 56 degrees in the north at
Akureyri whereas the average high here at this time of the year is 34.
Moreover, Wednesday and Thursday were no cooler than 44 degrees -- a
full 10 degrees above the daily mean high and nearly 20 degrees above
the daily average low.
Unseasonably warm air surged northward into central sections of
eastern China on Friday. Highs in the 70s were registered as far north
as southern Hebei province at Xingtai. A couple of especially warm
spots were Zhengzhou, Henan, at 75 degrees and Xi'an, Shaanxi, at 74
degrees; both cities have an average temperature of 47 degrees at this
time of the year.
