Parts of northern Scandinavia saw a dramatic change in the weather
this midweek as warming northwesterly winds scoured out a frigid air
mass. In Kvikkjokk, northern Sweden, Wednesday's morning low was
minus-34 degrees, but Thursday saw the temperature rise to 42 degrees
-- a change of 76 degrees within 42 hours. A twenty-four hour span from
midafternoon Wednesday to midafternoon Thursday registered a 54-degree
temperature increase. An average day at this time of the year would
have a high of 17 degrees and a low of 2, so Wednesday's low was 36
degrees below the mean and Thursday's high was 25 degrees above the
mean.
So far, February has been abnormally mild, even warm, in much of
western Asia from central Russia to Turkmenistan, and Thursday was no
different in southern parts of the region. Highs in the 70s were
registered in parts of far southern Kazakhstan, southeastern
Uzbekistan and southeastern Turkmenistan. In Tashkent, the capital of
Uzbekistan, Thursday's high of 78 degrees was 35 degrees above
average. Moreover, Thursday's morning low of 47 degrees was 4 degrees
above the mean daily high. Each day of the month here has been warmer
than average and, through Thursday, the average temperature for the
month is more than 13 degrees above the mean. The town of Kerki,
southeastern Turkmenistan, which lies within 50 miles to the north of
the Afghanistan border, rose to 79 degrees on Thursday, or almost 30
degrees above "normal".
A tropical depression continues to spin over the southeastern
Philippine Sea as of late Thursday afternoon, EST. The depression is
centered about 265 miles north of Yap Island where it holds highest
sustained winds of 35 mph; it is moving toward the west-northwest at
18 mph. This cyclone is forecast to acquire tropical storm strength on
a west-northwestward, open-water heading during the next 12-36 hours.
The remnants of Cyclone Fritz which were spinning over the Gulf of
Carpentaria Wednesday, EST, drifted into northwestern parts of
Queensland and northeastern parts of the Northern Territory of
Australia Thursday. Downpours continued to drench these regions
Thursday. Over the past three days, over a foot of rain has fallen at
Weipa, on the western part of the York Peninsula in northern
Queensland. Over 10 inches of rain has fallen in Cairns, Centre Island
has received just under 7 inches, so far, and Townsville was drenched
with nearly 3.50 inches of rain.
A storm system moving over Greece and the Aegean Sea Thursday,
EST, brought strong winds and rain to parts of the area. Winds were
sustained at 45 mph at El Hovo, Bulgaria and near 40 mph in Vailo,
Bulgaria. On top of Botev Mountain in central Bulgaria, winds
approached 100 mph. In the wake of the storm, lingering moisture and a
disturbance brought heavy snow to parts of northern Austria and
southeastern Germany. Three inches of new snow fell in Wendelstein,
Germany while just across the border, six inches was picked up in
Zugspitze, Austria. A fresh four inches of snow accumulated in
Feuerkogel, Austria while Sonnblick, Austria picked up over a foot and
a half of new snow.
Some of the heat was thwarted by passing downpours in western
Australia Thursday, EST. After a high of 106 in Cue, a quick downpour
of 0.50 of an inch of rain promoted a 23 degree temperature drop into
the upper 70s. Locations which were visited by rumbling storms
Thursday had similar relief from the scorching heat.
