In Australia, the heat goes on. Wednesday's worst was over the
state of South Australia, where 115 degrees was reached for a
second-straight afternoon. This time, the heat backed inland and
northwards, and thus was focused over the sparsely-settled outback.
Leading the way was Marree with 115 degrees. Oodnadatta reached 112.
High heat also built eastward to more populous lands of New South
Wales, where Bourke topped out nearly 110 degrees. In sea-side
Sydney, a gusty "southerly change", or southerly winds together with
thunderstorms, cut short the heat at 98 degrees, but the nearby
inland town of Richmond registered 106 degrees.
The former Cyclone Fritz Wednesday is astride the Cape York
Peninsula of northern Queensland. It contributed to a rash of
downpours leaving 6.5 inches of rain over two days at Cairns.
At Burwash Landing in southwestern Yukon Territory, Canada,
southeasterly winds gusting 50 mph Tuesday night powered the
mercury to 44 degrees, or 30 degrees above average. The overnight low
of 33 was more than 45 degrees above average.
A new tropical depression has come to life over the western North
Pacific Ocean. Late Wednesday afternoon, EST, the depression is
centered about 185 miles to the south-southwest of Agana, Guam, where
it holds highest sustained winds slightly below 30 mph. The depression
is moving northwestward at 14 mph. Forecasts call for this cyclone to
maintain a northwestward heading and to intensify to tropical storm
strength during the next 24-48 hours. On this projected course, the
cyclone would move over open waters of the Philippine Sea.
Wednesday's morning low of minus-34 degrees in Kvikkjokk, Sweden,
was about 35 degrees below the daily mean minimum.
