Last week ended -- and this week began -- with withering heat
spread widely over the outback of Australia. Monday, much of this was
over the vast state of Western Australia. Leonora had its
second-straight 115-degree afternoon, for instance. The following
towns topped 110 degrees on at least two-straight afternoons and may
have reached 115 degrees once: Wiluna, Leinster, Lavertin, Yeelirie,
Cashmere Downs.
In southeastern Australia, meantime, Sunday spread searing heat into
the state of Victoria. Melbourne hit 103 degrees (107 degrees at its
airport) as hot winds gusted 40 mph. But a welcome "cool change", or
cold front from the south, Monday capped Melbourne's daytime
temperatures in the lower 70s.
Monday afternoon, Vredendal, in southwestern South Africa, heated
to at least 110 degrees. Normally-moderate Cape Town hit 90 degrees.
Canarana, Brasil, in the western state of Mato Grosso, picked up
6.9 inches of rain within two days ended Monday morning. Also in the
vast nation, thunderstorms Sunday pelted Paracatu, state of Minas
Gerais, leaving 4.4 inches of rain.
Sunday into Monday, snow chilled eastern Afghanistan, notably
Kabul, along with the Himalayan foothills of northeastern Pakistan.
Rainfall was 5.9 inches within 48 hours as of early Tuesday
morning, local time, on the Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands, western
North Pacific Ocean.
Minami Daito Jima, a Japanese island in the northwestern
Philippine Sea east of Okinawa, was soaked by about 2.9 inches of
rain within 24 hours ended Monday evening, local time. February is
the driest month of the year here, but the month still has an average
rainfall of 3.3 inches.
Some unusually heavy wintertime downpours have struck the
Philippines in recent days. In the south, rainfall was at least 4.3
inches from Friday morning to early Monday afternoon, local time, at
Hinatuan, island of Mindanao. Rainfall may have been meaningfully
higher, but observation reports have been spotty. In the north on the
island of Luzon, Dagupan collected about 2.5 inches of rain on Sunday
whereas the average rainfall for all of February here is just 0.4 of
an inch.
