Frank is still a violent and dangerous tropical cyclone over the
South Indian Ocean. Late Monday afternoon, EST, the eye of Frank is
over open seas nearly 800 miles east-northeast of Mauritius, and 730
miles south-southwest of Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory.
Frank is packing highest sustained winds of nearly 145 mph, and it is
headed towards the east at 13 mph. Powerful as it is, Frank is of no
immediate threat to any land.
Cyclone Elita has rekindled over the Mozambique Channel off
western Madagascar. Late Monday afternoon, EST, Elita is 75 miles
northwest of Morondava, Madagascar, with highest sustained winds of
75 mph. The cyclone is drifting lazily towards the east-southeast at
5 mph. A landfall over western Madagascar is forecast within the next
12-24 hours. Elita has had a long and colorful history. As it took shape
late in January, it was responsible for a 28-inch rainfall within two
days at the island of Juan de Nova in the Mozambique Channel. Later,
Elita swept ashore near Mahajanga (Majunga), Madagascar, unleashing
high winds and spewing flooding rains. Over the following days, the
weak remnant depression first crossed, and then re-crossed
Madagascar, ending up in the Mozambique Channel at week's end. So, it
may have been only fitting that the re-born Elita since Saturday helped
to foster another 9.0 inches of rain at Juan de Nova.
Monday, Linda is dissipating as a named tropical cyclone over the
open South Indian Ocean.
Monday, spring-like warmth has spread over the heart of western
Europe. As of early afternoon, temperatures above 70 degrees were
registered in northern Spain and southwestern France, near 60 degrees
in northern France and southwestern Germany, above 55 degrees in much
of England, and near 50 degrees eastward to the Germany-Poland line.
Thus, day-time temperatures of 15 to locally 20 degrees above average
held sway.
It's been unusually hot lately in parts of New Caledonia, a South
Pacific island nation administered by France. At the Tontouta airport
near the capital city, Noumea, for example, highs of 96, 100 and 98
degrees were registered, respectively, on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
On average, daily temperatures rise to a peak of 86 degrees during
January and February which are the warmest months of the year.
In Calgary, Alberta, Canada, January ended with an average
temperature only 0.4 of a degree off the monthly climatological mean.
It was hardly a normal month, however, as far-flung temperature swings
cancelled themselves out. The month was broken into three separate
weather patterns. The first seven days were cold with an average
temperature more than 16 degrees below the mean. The next 16 days
each were much milder than average. Indeed, this stretch may be
unprecedented for its duration and the magnitude of its unseasonable
warmth. From January 8th through the 23rd, the average temperature was
21 degrees above the mean. The month's last eight days turned bitterly
cold again. The average temperature during this span, minus-12.5
degrees, was more than 26 degrees below "normal". The highest
temperature during the month was 52 degrees and the lowest, minus-29.
Only 4 days registered an average temperature that was within 10
degrees of the daily mean, yet at month's end the average temperature
was a mere tenths of a degree off the climatological mean proving how
deceptive statistics can sometimes be.
