[STORMREPORTS] Near Blizzard Conditions at WeatherMatrix HQ

From: Jesse Ferrell (WeatherMatrix) (jesse{at}weathermatrix.net)
Date: Wed Feb 12 2003 - 12:00:39 EST

I tried to send this message out at 5am this morning but my email program
decided it would rather crash. Due to the weather, we had a brief power
outage which rebooted the computer and it has been a bit touchy.

ANYWAY... winds have calmed somewhat this morning but we still have blowing
and drifting snow. Despite the small amounts of snow yesterday (hard to
tell but somwhere between 2 and 5") there are drifts of nearly two feet in
places. Roads this morning were terrible and some still are. Our maximum
wind gust was 40 mph but our wind equipment was damaged in October and
rarely registers over 40mph, so this is in the top 10.

When the front was passing through at 4am the temperature plummetted from
32 to 15 degrees by 8am.

We also set a new ALL-TIME record wind chill this morning at 8:19am on both
stations of -28 F. The previous 3 records were set last month, so you get
the picture how this winter is going :)

HERE IS MY ORIGINAL REPORT FROM 5AM:

Here in Central PA we have near blizzard conditions tonight...
winds are 40-50mph in the region with blowing and drifting snow. Possibly
the highest winds with snow that I have ever seen. Temperatures started to
plummet at 3am and wind chills are nearing -20F. Some schools in the area
have cancelled classes for today and the NWS issued this dire prediction at
3am:

"
EXPECT WIND GUSTS TO AROUND 50 MPH AS THE FRONT PASSES ACROSS THE
REGION. THIS WILL COMBINE WITH THE LOCALIZED HEAVY SNOW AND CAUSE
NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS FOR A TIME THIS MORNING...
"

Had I listened to the reports from WeatherMatrix Members earlier tonight I
would have had a better idea of what was coming!
