Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the high desert of the Mid Atlantic.
There was a lessen that was taught in one of my meteorology classes at Penn
State about times when it will be too cold to snow. I am now regretting the
fact that I slept through most of the class. I thought it would be close to
impossible to snow below 10 degrees. It isn't the first time I have been
wrong. I had a tenth of an inch of snowfall here last night at my homestead
in the hills. That isn't so surprising until you consider the fact at the
time of the snow the temperature was 7 degrees with a dew point of - 2. The
air is so dry I can't believe there was any moisture to squeeze out. At 1:42
AM this morning (January 24) I had a wind gust out of the North at 58 mph.
The wind chill was - 36 degrees (- 26 degrees with the new formula). Quite
chilly. I have decided to continue to use the old wind chill formula for
several reasons. One, my weather station operates under the old formula. Two,
it takes too much of my brain power to calculate the wind chill using the new
formula. Three, all my past wind chill records were set using the old
formula. Four, I am not totally convinced the new formula is worth the paper
it is written on yet. And fifth, I just don't want to change. So there! {:0>}
Try to stay warm. Until later.
Jim
