A rare "beach snow" is possible in Southeast NC Thursday.

A look at the NWS records indicates that records were set in January for
daily snowfall only in 1994 and 1998.

A look at the historical records from AccuWeather.com Professional for 1992
forward indicates that the last time Wilmington received snow over two
inches of snow all winter (which is predicted) was in 1995 (5"). 4 other
years had less than two inches of snow for a seasonal total.

In any case, it's fairly rare.

...WINTER STORM WATCH FOR LATE TONIGHT AND THURSDAY...

SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP ACROSS THE WATCH AREA...MAINLY AFTER
MIDNIGHT. A STEADY SNOW IS EXPECTED BETWEEN ABOUT 4 AND 11 THURSDAY
MORNING. THE SNOW MAY BRIEFLY BE HEAVY. AT THIS TIME...TOTAL SNOW
ACCUMULATIONS ACROSS BRUNSWICK...PENDER AND NEW HANOVER COUNTIES ARE
EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM 2 TO 3 INCHES.

AT THIS TIME...THE GREATEST SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS
THE IMMEDIATE NORTH COAST OF NORTH CAROLINA. HOWEVER...SHOULD LOW
PRESSURE TRACK A LITTLE FURTHER WEST...HEAVIER SNOW AMOUNTS MAY
OCCUR ACROSS SOUTHEAST NORTH CAROLINA AS WELL. HOWEVER...IF LOW
PRESSURE WERE TO DEVELOP FURTHER TO THE EAST AND PASS FURTHER
OFFSHORE THAN CURRENTLY PROJECTED...THE BRUNT OF THE SNOW WOULD FALL
ACROSS THE OPEN ATLANTIC.
