[STORMREPORTS] January starts like December ended. Smithsburg, MD 2 NE

Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the high desert of the Mid Atlantic.
After a record month of strong winds in December I was ready to take a break
with some calm conditions in January. And then New Year's Day came. Strong
winds and heavy rain pounded my homestead in the hills. The average wind for
the first was a quite brisk 32.4 mph. I had a peak gust out of the east of 54
mph. My station had 1.88 inches of rain. It is the second most precipitation
in one day for the month of January. The record is 1.90 inches during the
first day of the blizzard of '96, Jan. 7, 1996. Minor flooding was wide
spread and the entire region was under a flash flood warning. The ground was
already saturated from a melting snow pack during the last few days. It has
started to rain again outside. Maybe some more snow tomorrow. I do remember
complaining when I wasn't receiving any precipitation. Ugh! Until later.
                        Jim
