A white Christmas in the Big Apple to remember! The intense storm which delivered severe weather and tornadic activity to the Gulf states, and covering the ground with white on areas to the north of it's track from the Central Plains eastward to the Ohio Valley, transitioned into a Nor'Easter today, and a powerful one at that! Pressures were extremely low with this system as it bombed out off the NJ coast. With the deepening of the system and the intense vertical lift, as well as the much anticipated windshift as the storm tredged to the east of NYC metro, the heavy rainfall of early Christmas day evolved into what was at times a blinding snowstorm, with lightning and thunder! During the 5-6pm hour here in Queens, NY (just east of Manhattan) I witnessed 6 flashes of lightning followed by the rolling thunder, all as the snow came down at a heavy rate, being blown horizantally with the gusty northerly winds which were in the range of 30-40mph. This intense thundersnow episode in metro NY occurred as the low pr
essure passed eastward just south of Long Island. The snow continued thereafter at a heavy to moderate clip much of the time through the evening hours before dwindling to snow showers at the 10pm hour.
