A storm packing a fullback's power and a sprinter's
speed roared through Houston late Monday night,
damaging homes, knocking out power, uprooting trees,
toppling walls at shopping malls and lowering the
temperature 14 degrees in an hour.
A wall reportedly was damaged at West Oaks Mall and
trees were toppled at Memorial City. The Harris County
Sheriff's Department said trees fell over neighborhood
roads in the county's northern part, and power was out
in some areas. No injuries were reported late Monday.
Winds measuring 50 to 65 mph raked a wide swath of the
city from the west to the east, said Brian Kyle, a
meteorologist with the National Weather Service. About
2 inches of rain fell in northwest Harris County and
about an inch in the remainder of the county, Kyle
said.
120,000 without power
