Hidi-ho good neighbors. Greetings from the wind swept high desert of the Mid
Atlantic. I have spent the better part of two weeks placing 1,158 feet of
Christmas lights on the outside of my homestead in the hills and then the
winds came. Today (Dec. 23) I had a wind gust of 45 mph. This is the fifth
consecutive day with wind gusts at or above 40 mph. That is a record
surpassing two consecutive days set on many occasions. Wind gusts of 40 mph
or greater have been recorded at my station in six of the last eight days. I
have recorded ten such days so far in December. That surpasses the old record
of eight 40 mph or higher gust days set just last month. I have been keeping
records for Smithsburg, MD for the last 25 years. On any average year my
homestead in the hills will experience 29 days where the wind would gust to
40 mph or higher. I have had wind gusts at or above 40 mph on 18 different
days in just over six weeks. Trees weakened by an ice storm 12 days ago are
still falling over power lines in my region today. Power crews are still
trying to finish up restoring power to all their customers before the next
round of snow, sleet and rain pummel my region in the next couple of days.
Ugh! Until later.
Jim
