ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland - Dozens of flights were canceled and scores of
schools were closed Wednesday as a blizzard brought high winds across
eastern Newfoundland, dumping almost half a meter (1.5 feet) of snow on St.
John's.
The blizzard, which hit eastern Newfoundland on Tuesday afternoon, moved
north of the Avalon Peninsula by Wednesday. The Newfoundland Weather
Center said wind gusts could reach 110 kilometers (68 miles) per hour in
some coastal areas.
